Check the Power First

The most common cause of a stairlift stopping is a power issue. Check that the stairlift is plugged in and that the socket is switched on. Also check your home's fuse box to see if a circuit breaker has tripped.

Check the Charge

Most stairlifts run on a rechargeable battery that charges via the rail. If the stairlift has been left off the charging strip for a period, the battery may be flat. Park the stairlift on its charging strip at the top or bottom of the stairs and wait a few minutes before trying again.

Check for Obstructions

Stairlifts have sensors on the footrest and carriage that stop the lift if an obstruction is detected. Check that nothing is resting against the footrest or blocking the path of the stairlift along the rail.

Check the Key Switch

Many stairlifts have a key switch that can accidentally be turned to the 'off' position. Check that the key is turned to the 'on' position. This is a surprisingly common cause of apparent breakdowns.
