8 Stairlift Maintenance Tips to Keep Your Lift Running Smoothly

A well-maintained stairlift should give many years of reliable service. These simple tips from our engineers can help you keep your stairlift running smoothly between annual service visits.

1. Always Return the Stairlift to Its Charging Position

After each use, park the stairlift on its charging strip — usually at the top or bottom of the stairs. This keeps the battery topped up and prevents the stairlift from unexpectedly losing power mid-journey. Most stairlifts indicate when they're charging via a small light.

2. Keep the Rail Clean and Clear

Dust, hair, and debris can build up on the stairlift rail and affect the drive mechanism. Wipe the rail regularly with a dry cloth. Avoid using water or household cleaning products, which can damage the rail coating and lubrication.

3. Keep the Track Lubricated

The rail requires periodic lubrication to ensure smooth, quiet operation. Your GentleRise engineer will lubricate the track during an annual service — but if the stairlift starts to sound rough or jerky between services, contact us for advice.

4. Check the Safety Sensors

Run your hand gently under the footrest and against the carriage to confirm the obstruction sensors are working — the stairlift should stop immediately when pressure is applied. If a sensor isn't responding, call us for a check.

5. Test the Remote Controls

Test all remote controls regularly and replace batteries as needed. Weak batteries can cause intermittent operation and are a common cause of apparent stairlift faults.

6. Inspect the Seat Belt

Check the seat belt periodically for signs of fraying, damage, or a faulty buckle. The seat belt is a primary safety feature — if it shows any wear, contact GentleRise for a replacement.

7. Don't Overload the Stairlift

Every stairlift has a stated maximum weight capacity — typically 100–130kg for standard models. Overloading the stairlift can damage the motor and drive mechanism, and in some cases is a safety risk. Check your stairlift's manual for its specific limit.

8. Book an Annual Service

The single most effective thing you can do to maintain your stairlift is to have it professionally serviced once a year. A GentleRise service includes a full safety check, lubrication of all moving parts, battery and motor testing, and a complete operational test. Contact us on 0333 335 5637 to book.
